How to Make a Scarf from a Tea Towel

This is the next installment of the “Get Your Crafty Self In Gear and Start Making Those Holiday Gifts” Month series of blog posts. And given its simplicity, this is really more of an idea rather than a tutorial. Along the way as I’ve been collecting and rescuing vintage linens, I have come upon some really interesting tea towels. I thought that this one in particular would make a nice scarf.
I really liked the colors in this tea towel. The pink and black on the cream linen reminded me of a 50′s era kitchen. I thought it would make a really unusual scarf.
So after I pressed it out with a hot iron and some sizing to get the wrinkles out, I simply measured 15″ across (which allowed me to avoid the small hole on the right side) and cut lengthwise. I then cut the 15″ wide piece in half lengthwise to leave me with 2 -7.1/2″ wide pieces. I sewed the ends together, making one long
piece. Then I just finished the edges by pressing in 1/2″ and then 1/4″ again and sewing with a straight stitch.
Simple, but with the right tea towel, very fashionable, and a lovely holiday gift! What do you think? What about using a funky vintage tablecloth? I’ll have to check my stash and see what else I can find!
