Well, I hadn’t planned on being away from this blog for so long, but, wow, it’s a busy time of year! I’ve been crazy busy making lots of Christmas gifts, but I stopped long enough to make another Christmas stocking. This one was made from a denim skirt and a bright striped t-shirt. I loved the colors of this shirt and couldn’t resist it any more.
Here’s the tutorial:
I used the same pattern I made for myselfwhen I made my first stocking a few months ago. If you want to see how Idid that, here’s the link. I used the pattern to cut 2 pieces from the denim skirt. A denim skirt works better than jeans in this case, because it allows for a wider piece of fabric.
I cut the same from a t-shirt for the lining of the stocking.
Then, I cut 3 pocket shaped pieces from double thickness of t-shirt fabric. (You’ll have 6 pieces total)
I sewed 2 pocket pieces right sides together, using a 1/4″ seam, leaving one short bottom edge open to turn. Repeat for the other 2 pockets. Turn and press the opening to the inside.
This might be a good time to sew the buttons on the pockets if you’d like. I didn’t decide to put buttons on mine until after I was done. It worked ok, but if you want to do any embellishing to the pockets, it would probably be easier before you sew them on to the stocking.
Place the pockets on right side of the front of the stocking, and pin in place. Stitch close to the sides and bottom, making sure to have the edge left open for turning pressed under.
Pin the lining pieces right sides together and sew leaving the top open. Trim seams and clip the curves. Do not turn right side out.
Then do the same for the denim stocking pieces. Trim seams, clip curves and turn right side out. Press.
Cut a 9″ x 1.25 ” piece from a single thickness of the t-shirt fabric. (I know the piece shown is longer than 9″, I found I needed to cut it smaller and forgot to take another photo!!) Press in half long ways, then press under the raw edges to make a long skinny strap. Stitch close to open edge.
Place stocking inside of lining, right sides together. Fold your strap piece in half and place between the
stocking and lining at one end.
Pin and stitch top seam leaving about a 3″ opening on one side. Trim seams and turn right side out, placing the lining inside the stocking. Press top seam flat and hand stitch the opening closed.
And that’s it. Easy peasy Refashioned Christmas Stocking!
I’d love to know if you make one! And if you’d like to check out how I made this stocking, here’s the link to that post.
